Greenbank helps Typhoo get recycling off to a T

Typhoo Tea

Four Greenbank compactors are helping a major UK tea factory in its bid to recycle 100pc of its waste.

Typhoo Tea Ltd has been using three of the machines at its UK headquarters on the Wirral since 2007, most recently for the skeletal waste of its tea bags (the off-cuts of filter paper that remain when the tea bags are cut out).

As it drew close to being able to process nearly all of the site's waste, Typhoo had a fourth compactor installed this year and, as a result, will reach its 90 percent recycling target by the end of August.

Now, Typhoo Operations Manager Ken Mullin says not only has the company saved money, he is confident that Typhoo Tea Ltd can achieve 100pc recycling early in 2011.

"Because all our waste is now compacted so well by the machines, our landfill has significantly reduced and so too have our transport costs," Ken explained.

"We used to have our waste collected twice a week and now we only need it taken away once a month!"

Greenbank customised two of its machines to enable them to be loaded from the side rather than the top and could therefore be accommodated in an area with a low ceiling. They also supplied wheelie bins with extra low castors so that they could go through a low hatch.

It is this attention to detail plus its record of always delivering what has been promised that has secured them a good, ongoing relationship with Typhoo.

"Looking after all the waste at Typhoo and striving for 100 percent recycling is my passion," admitted Ken Mullin.

"I obviously need equipment to help me achieve this and decided to bring Greenbank on board after they persisted in asking for a chance to prove they could provide the solution I needed."

And I have to say they have impressed in always doing what they say rather than proposing what you want to hear and then not being able to deliver."
Robin Evershed, Greenbank's Sales Director, said they prided themselves in looking after their customers as well as giving good value. And he applauded Typhoo Tea Ltd's recycling achievements to date.

"It is important that all companies these days recycle as much as possible and we are happy to help and come up with a solution to fit individual needs," he added.

"But it takes someone on the staff who is as committed as Ken to get anywhere near 100pc!"
